Aerobatics: Stall Turn

In this manoeuvre the a/c enters a near vertical climb. Rudder is applied to slice the nose down until the a/c is in a dive on a reciprocal heading.

Note that this manoeuvre is not possible in most modern jet fighters, except in a/c with horizontal thrust vectoring capabilities.

STALL TURN CHECKLIST

  • PERFORM HASELL CHECKS
  • ESTABLISH HEADING AND ALTITUDE
  • ESTABLISH SPEED AT STALL SPEED PLUS 50 KTS
  • PITCH UP 80 DEGREES
    Airspeed will drop rapidly, as it nears stall speed:
  • APPLY FULL LEFT (OR RIGHT) RUDDER
    Aircraft will yaw left (or right)
  • CHECK LATERAL CONTROL
    Do not allow a roll to develop
  • CHECK HEADING
    Should be 180 deg off the original heading
  • THROTTLE UP
  • RECOVER FROM DIVE
    Pull out at 3 g's
  • NOTE ALTITUDE
